Although “Bones” ended its run in 2017 after 12 seasons, fans of the crime drama apparently have long memories.
That came to light when fans of the David Boreanaz-Emily Deschanel series noticed a marked similarity between the plot of a 2009 “Bones” episode and a recent episode of Global’s new crime drama “Instinct”, in which Alan Cumming (“The Good Wife”) stars as a former CIA agent — now a college professor — who helps the NYPD solve crimes.
A Reddit user summed up the similarities between the episodes, both of which involved the murder of an Amish piano prodigy.
“They [sic] were a lot of similarities,” wrote the Reddit user, including, “Both mothers wanting to keep the picture of their death son (against their religion). Both guys had to build themselves a piano (one with rocks, the other with popsicle sticks), that the detectives found in their room at home. At the end both families saw their sons on a video playing piano.”
Meanwhile, viewers also began calling out “Instinct” on Twitter, with one remarking “all of us crime procedural nerds” watch the same mystery shows on TV.
After it was brought to his attention, “Instinct” showrunner Michael Rauch apologized to “Bones” creator Hart Hanson and the show’s fans, saying the similarities were “very distressing and 100% unintentional. Looking into it and how to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
