SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t watched tonight’s episode of “Big Brother Canada” on Global, then STOP READING NOW! Spoilers lie ahead….
A week that looked set for a predictable ending is completely tipped upside down when “Big Brother Canada” fans vote to save Ryan, leading to last minute panic and the shock eviction of Erica.
Lines were finally drawn last week when the remnants of the White Room alliance saved Ryan and set their sights on the power duo of Kaela and Derek. The showmantic couple were in clear danger until Derek gained immunity and Kaela secured Head of Household in an impressive endurance competition victory. Now the biggest targets in the house had all the power, and that meant scramble time for Paras, Maddy, Johnny, and Will — the four who voted to keep Ryan.
Kaela kept her cards close to her chest, but initially, it seemed like she was leaning towards nominating Maddy and Johnny, the catalysts behind last week’s vote flip. Unhappy with the way things were heading, Paras grabbed Kaela’s ear before the nomination ceremony and threw Ryan under the bus, identifying him as the ringleader of the anti-“Daela” sentiment sweeping the house. Kaela fell for Paras’ ploy and wound up sparing Maddy and Johnny, and instead nominated Ryan and a frustrated Will.
A dejected Ryan tried to explain to Kaela that she’s being played and will regret her decision once she plays back the footage at home. But with the entire house throwing him under the bus, the 39-year-old fire safety technician was a dead man walking, especially after losing the Power of Veto competition. He attempted to gather votes by assuring his loyalty and promising to nominate “Daela” next week, while also throwing suspicion on where Will’s true allegiances lie. It’s a solid effort, but at this point, Ryan needed a Hail Mary to survive.
Ryan’s prayers were answered when Arisa Cox dropped a bombshell on the houseguests and announced that this week Canada had the choice to save a nominee. Mere moments before the eviction, Arisa revealed that Canada has voted to save Ryan. Wows abound and jaws hit the floor as Kaela was told she must name a replacement nominee. During a brief spell of pre-nomination scrambling, Kaela told Ali that she wants to backdoor Erica and asked if she’ll vote her out. Ali was hesitant, but there wasn’t enough time to talk Kaela around.
Kaela nominated Erica and the “Big Brother” comp beast was evicted in a 5-2 vote. The shock elimination caused an eruption of emotion as Johnny and Erica fired a slew of F-bombs towards Kaela. “I was told you were coming after me,” Kaela explained as Erica stomped up the stairs. “I respect you a lot,” Kaela continued, trying to soften the blow. “I don’t give a s**t,” Erica retorted. In a week where the houseguests have been trying to keep emotions under control and play things close to the chest, Erica’s elimination brought everything to the surface.
It’s a lucky break for Ryan and a harsh exit for Erica, who was one of the heavy favourites to win the whole season. “I don’t blame Kaela,” Erica told Arisa during her eviction interview. “She got rid of me because she knows she can’t play as well as me.” She went on to say that she hopes Johnny and Ryan can find a way to stick around and is rooting for Johnny to take it all the way to the end.
Canada’s decision to save Ryan seemed to be an attempt to shake up the game and stick it to “Daela,” and while it definitely caused turbulence, it, unfortunately, resulted in one of the season’s brightest stars being wiped out in the process. Twists like this are always controversial because the instant entertainment value eventually fades away and all that is left is the sense that a deserving player just got royally screwed by no real fault of their own.
The Player Chart:
Take a look at which houseguests are heading towards the light and which are sinking to the fiery depths, sticking with the heaven/hell terminology, of course.
Stairway to Heaven:
Ali/Olivia – The “ding-dong” duo of Ali and Olivia remained under the radar all week while continuing to work their magic behind the scenes. They were put in a tough position with tonight’s vote but should be able to avoid any immediate backlash. “Daela” will always remain the biggest targets for the White Room alliance, and if Derek manages to pull out an HOH win, he won’t nominate Ali and Liv after they just helped take out Erica.
Highway to Hell:
Johnny – Throughout the past few weeks Johnny was playing a smart and subtle game, controlling things from the outside and staying out of the crosshairs. But recently he’s started to make himself a target, mainly by getting too close to Erica, and now his post-eviction blowup at Kaela is only going to increase the target on his back.
“Big Brother Canada” airs on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. ET/PT, Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT, and Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Global.
