Twenty-five years after charming an entire generation of neighbourhood rascals, the cast of the coming-of-age baseball classic “The Sandlot” reunited — on a baseball diamond, of course.
The reunion came courtesy of “Today”, who brought the actors who played Smalls, Ham, Squints, DeNunez, Yeah-Yeah, Timmy, Bertram and Repeat to a baseball field to joke, reminisce and get a few innings in. “The Sandlot” was released in 1993 and details the story of Smalls (Tom Guiry), the new kid in the neighbourhood who falls in with the local baseball scamps as they experience life, love and America’s pastime.
In the segment, Marty York, who portrayed Yeah-Yeah (and, as a buff grownup looks nothing like that fast-talking skinny kid), opened up about the enduring legacy of the film and its effect on his life.
“It’s been crazy, it definitely gets you in places for free,” he joked, eliciting laughs from his co-stars. “You can’t walk through a Las Vegas casino without someone yelling, ‘Yeah-Yeah!'”
As for the beloved Squints, whose amorous stunt to woo the neighbourhood beauty, Wendy Peppercorn, was the stuff of legend, actor Chauncey Leopardi said his teenage daughter isn’t impressed.
“I think she just thinks I’m kind of a dork,” he said.
But even if the actors aren’t household names, the characters they played are. NBA superstar Kevin Durant currently has a picture of Ham as his Twitter photo.
“I am Kevin Durant,” joked Patrick Renna.
Renna noted that actor Michael Vitar, who portrayed Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez, was absent from the reunion. Vitar eventually gave up acting and became an L.A. firefighter.
“We’ve gotta get Mike, we gotta do the documentary called ‘Finding Benny’,” he said.
Joking aside, Renna also took time to reminisce about having the team back together again.
“Seeing these guys, some of them I haven’t seen in 25 years,” he said. “But it is just like we’re back.”
