The Weeknd got a little emotional at Coachella on Friday.
The 28-year-old singer took the stage as the festival’s day one headlining act, and visibly broke down in tears during his performances of “Call Out My Name” and “Privilege”.
The tracks were both dropped as part of his six-song EP, “My Dear Melancholy,” last month — and both appear to be about his relationship with Selena Gomez. The pair dated for 10 months before breaking up last October.
“Call Out My Name” is seemingly full of Gomez references, as The Weeknd sings, “We found each other/ I helped you out of a broken place/ You gave me comfort/ But falling for you was my mistake,” before opening up about the “rough” times and alluding to Gomez’s kidney transplant.
And in “Privilege,” the Grammy winner appears to sing about their breakup.
“Enjoy your privileged life/ ‘Cause I’m not gonna hold you through the night / We said our last goodbyes / So let’s just try to end it with a smile / And I don’t wanna hear that you’re suffering,” he croons, before continuing, “And I’ma f**k the pain away, and I know I’ll be OK / They said our love is just a game, I don’t care what they say / But I’ma drink the pain away, I’ll be back to my old ways / And I got two red pills to take the blues away.”
Gomez and The Weeknd attended Coachella together last year, with him making his debut on her Instagram in a sweet photo from the festival. See more on their split in the video below.
