One of WWE’s power couples is no more.
The wrestling promotion’s top star John Cena and “Total Bellas” star Nikki Bella are putting an end to their six-year-long relationship.
John took to Twitter this morning, seemingly to share his thoughts on the split with his followers.
The tweet comes a few hours after he shared a cryptic Instagram post last night:
“While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another,” the couple said in a previous statement published on Twitter. “We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives.”
The news puts an end to their engagement exactly one year and 13 days after Cena, 40, proposed to Bella, 34, at Wrestlemania 33 in front of an estimated 75,000 fans and countless more watching from home.
Nikki’s twin sister Brie Bella briefly opened up about the split in a statement on her Snapchat. “He’ll always be family. My heart is hurting for him and my sister #Truth,” she wrote. Responding to rumours she wanted to “kill” Cena over the breakup, Brie said: “I’d never say this and I’ll always love John like a brother. False!!”
Just last month, Cena opened up to Us Weekly about how much work a serious relationship is.
“Relationships are hard. Don’t ever think that love is easy,” said Cena. “Love is beautiful, but we’ve had to come to the realization after being together for five years that love is not easy. We work every day on us. We have our problems just like everybody else. Some of our problems are very public, some of them aren’t. But we work every day on us.”
“Anytime I get upset, I always just realize that I can’t live without her and I love her and that’s why I cave in on a lot of stuff,” he stated.
