Warner Bros. is making history by selecting Sundance Film Festival winner Cathy Yan to direct its upcoming Harley Quinn spinoff with Margot Robbie.
Yan will become the first female Asian director to ever helm a superhero movie and only the second female director to helm a DC movie after “Wonder Woman”‘s Patty Jenkins. Earlier this year, Yan took home the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance for her indie feature “Dead Pigs”. The film is her first and only directing credit.
According to Deadline, Yan’s pitch for the film was “exceptional,” making her WB’s top pick over more established and male directors. Yan’s hiring is backed by the film’s star and producer Robbie who was adamant the film be helmed by a woman.
Based on the female collective known as the Birds Of Prey, which includes Harley Quinn, Batgirl and Black Canary among others, the script will be written by Christina Hodson, who is also penning the Batgirl spin-off.
