Get ready for an irreverent, hilarious tribute to the best of Canadian film and TV with today’s announcement that Norm Macdonald will be the host of the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards.

The former SNL Weekend Update anchor, last seen as a judge on this summer’s Last Comic Standing, was named host of the upcoming ceremony by Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television CEO Helga Stephenson.

“Comedian Norm Macdonald has done brilliant stand-up comedy everywhere and on every show from Saturday Night Live to Just for Laughs, so we know how lucky we are to have him host our 2016 Canadian Screen Awards,”; says Stephenson.

Adds Barry Avrich, producer of the show: “We’re thrilled to have Norm. Rules will be broken. People will be offended.”;

“Out of all the award shows on the planet, the CSAs are definitely the newest,” quips Macdonald. “I’m thrilled to host the show and I hope I can get back across the border with the award they’d better give me.”;

The CSAs were launched in 2013, amalgamating the Geminis (honouring Canadian film) and the Genies (Canadian TV).

The fifth annual Canadian Screen Awards will take place on Sunday, March 13 at Toronto’s Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. For the first time ever, the broadcast will air live for viewers on the east coast.
