Former NHL star Sean Avery is in trouble with the law — again — after a routine traffic stop in The Hamptons led cops to search him and discover a pocketful of prescription painkillers last week, including oxycodone and Roxicodone.

But what’s really interesting is why the North York native was pulled over in the first place, reports the 27east.com blog, which states that Avery was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, both of which are misdemeanours.

“Police said the criminal mischief charge stemmed from an incident the day before, when Mr. Avery, who lives in the village, reportedly threw objects at passing vehicles. Police could not specify where that incident took place, but on Monday, police radio transmissions indicated that Mr. Avery had contacted authorities about speeding cars on David Whites Lane.”;

After being arrested, the former New York Rangers player and Dancing With the Stars contestant was taken to the police station for processing, later released on $500 bail.

This isn’t Avery’s first brush with the law. Back in 2011, he was arrested in Calfornia after calling police “fat little pigs” and challenging them to fight him when they turned up at a raucous house party he was throwing.

The timing of this latest arrest isn’t great; Avery and fiancée Hillary Rhoda (a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model) are planning to get married later this month.

Following the arrest, Avery’s lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., was quoted in The New York Post stating that his client “has prescriptions for the medications that were the basis of this charge,” adding that they “look forward” to addressing the charges in court.
