He became a household name by playing Spider-Man, but now Andrew Garfield is taking on a role that’s unfortunately much more relatable.

In 99 Homes, the actor is Dennis Nash, a single father who’s evicted from the home he shares with his son and mother (Laura Dern).

“There’s something all too human about this film,”; Garfield tells ET Canada’s Sangita Patel.

In an effort to win back his home, Dennis begins working for the businessman who kicked him out of his home (Michael Shannon). The job requires Dennis to evict others from their home.

When asked if he’s ever done something he really didn’t want to do, Garfield says, “I think every day you get the opportunity to make that decision, in a small moment or to a bigger degree. I don’t think we realize it though.”;

He prepared for his role in 99 Homes, set in Florida during the 2008 mortgage crisis, by staying in a motel and speaking to families there who had been forced out of their homes. Garfield tells us the struggling families were extraordinarily eager to tell their stories.

“They’re all confused and hurt,”; he says. “They’ve all been traumatized and brutalized… all I hope is that some healing happens and they see aspects of their struggle truthfully reflected back to them.”;

99 Homes is playing in select theatres and opens everywhere October 9.
