Back in the day, Will Smith once had the opportunity to meet his idol Michael Jackson — and reveals he has rap impresario/convicted felon Suge Knight to thank.
In the latest “Storytime” video for his YouTube channel (above), Smith recounts being at the BET Awards, also attended by the King of Pop, and being desperate to meet him.
As the evening wore on, he felt his opportunity slipping away when suddenly a “frenzy” broke out and he found himself shoved into a utility closet.
As Smith recalls, Knight caused some sort of disturbance that led security at the event to worry about the safety of the stars in attendance.
Hiding in the closet, Smith soon realized he wasn’t alone.
“I hear, ‘Hey,’ and I turn around and Michael Jackson is behind me in the closet,” says Smith in the video.
Jumping on his opportunity, he engaged Jackson in a brief conversation, revealing that Jackson wanted to talk about comic books.
“I don’t know anything about no comic books,” Smith admits, “but I’m here with Michael Jackson, I ain’t gonna tell him that.”
The next thing he knew, the disturbance was over, Jackson’s security guard pushed Smith aside (“like he never saw ‘The Fresh Prince’,” he joked) and whisked the “Thriller” singer away — but not before Smith was able to pose together momentarily while someone snapped a photo of them together.
Meeting Jackson remains an amazing experience for Smith, who quips, “I guess I have Suge Knight to thank for it.”
