In an all-new Billboard cover story, Selena Gomez reveals for the first time that she has undergone chemotherapy for lupus. The young star comments on how the illness had temporarily pushed her career to the backburner. Now, with her second solo album newly released, Gomez reveals that it was far from smooth sailing to get to where she is now.
“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about,” she said. “I could’ve had a stroke.”
In reference to the rumours that began to surface as Gomez took her leave of absence, Gomez states: “I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re a**holes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”
The hard working former child star is putting her foot down and says she’s done with being mistreated by Internet trolls and the tabloids. “I’m so f***ing nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me…I’ve been working since I was seven. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story.”
As for her thoughts on former beau Justin Bieber’s new career turnaround, and whether or not his actions inspired her, Gomez confidently states: “No. This is my time. I’ve deserved this. I earned it. This is all me.”
