Zendaya wants to see real change in the way Hollywood deals with representation.
The “Spider-Man: Homecoming” actress appeared at Beautycon on Sunday in New York where she discussed the ways in which she uses her platform to push for more diversity.
“As a black woman, as a light-skinned black woman, it’s important that I say, ‘Listen, I’m using my privilege and my platform to show you how much beauty there is in the African-American community,'” Zendaya explained.
The 21-year-old then talked about her experiences taking meetings in Hollywood.
“I am Hollywood’s, I guess you could say, acceptable version of a black girl,” she said, “and that has to change.”
“We’re vastly too beautiful and too interesting for me to be the only representation of that,” Zendaya added.
On Twitter, fans of the “Greatest Showman” star applauded her for speaking openly and honestly, and for taking a strong stand for change.
