The Queen has sent a message of condolence to the people of Canada after a van driver plowed into a number of pedestrians in Toronto on Monday.

A man, thought to be Alek Minassian, killed 10 people and injured a further 14 when he drove a rented vehicle down a sidewalk in the Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area of North York.

Following the tragic incident, the Queen released a statement to express her sadness, with her offering her “deepest condolences” to the families and friends of those who were lost, injured, and affected.

The Queen’s statement comes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discussed the horrific attack from the House of Commons.

As well as calling the incident “senseless,” Trudeau also said he hopes that Canadians won’t let this change how they live their lives.

He explained, “Obviously we need to continue to reflect on the changing situations that we are in, and do everything we can to keep Canadians safe.

“But we cannot, as Canadians, choose to live in fear every single day as we go about our daily business. We need to focus on doing what we can, we must, to keep Canadians safe, while we stay true to the freedoms and values that we all as Canadians hold dear.”
