While everyone struggles to wrap their collective heads around Kanye West’s declaration of support for President Donald Trump, which includes being photographed wearing a “Make America Great Again” baseball cap, Stephen Colbert took to the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theater on Wednesday to offer a theory during his “Late Show” monologue.
“I think Kanye is lobbying for a job as Trump’s new communications director,” Colbert quipped.
Colbert pointed to Yeezy’s pro-Trump tweet, in which the rapper declared that the president “is my brother” and that they both share “dragon energy,” noting that “we have the right to independent thought.”
“And I independently think that Kanye has lost his mind,” joked Colbert, adding that Yeezy should have probably put his phone down after an out-of-left-field tweet:
West’s supportive tweet, noted Colbert, earned a shout-out from the president.
“Trump actually responded to Kanye,” said Colbert. “I assume because an alarm went off in the White House that someone on Twitter was being even crazier than him.”
Colbert joked that the pair’s “total bro-fest” was to promote their upcoming album, Yeezy & Sleazy.
“So congratulations to President Donald Trump on securing the coveted Kanye endorsement. Right now it’ s just you and: ‘BILL COSBY INNOCENT!!!!!!!!!!'” joked Colbert, highlighting one of West’s more controversial tweets from the past.
Jimmy Fallon also goofed on the Trump-Yeezy Twitter bromance in his “Tonight Show” monologue.
