Kelis admitted her ex-husband Nas was mentally and physically abusive as she spoke out about their marriage in a new interview with Hollywood Unlocked.
The 38-year-old, full name Kelis Rogers, was married to Nas, 44, from 2005 to 2010 and since their split, the couple have fought multiple times over the custody of their son Knight, 8.
Explaining their relationship, Kelis explained: “It was dark. There was a lot of drinking, there was a lot of just mental and physical abuse.”
When asked if the rapper hit her, the musician stated that they would fight, with him hitting her and her hitting him back.
The “Milkshake” hitmaker continued, “He would black out, he drank way too much, he will never admit it. There were times when we would have literally the worst night ever and would wake up the next day and it’s like it never happened.”
Kelis admitted that she did think the pair were soulmates, however, she added that although she still believes in the idea of soulmates, she doesn’t know “if that means it’s right.”
The singer’s candid interview also saw her speak out about Chris Brown abusing Rihanna.
Kelis went on, “The only way I can describe it is it was like double dutch: do I jump in, do I say it? Because I had bruises all over my body at that time. I just wasn’t ready to walk… I felt like this is my partner, I chose this, I’m going to make it work.”
She added of why she didn’t say anything before now: “I thought that I could love past this, that we can get through this.”
Kelis’ interview comes after it was reported earlier this month that Nas had allegedly submitted court documents saying she had violated their agreement by not letting him see their son over the Easter holiday.
The Blast claimed Nas said in a statement: “When I arrived at Kelis’s house, she immediately began screaming at me, telling me that I could not take our son. She was so irate I did not know what to do.”
