A seemingly innocuous photo shared by a “Game of Thrones” actor may have accidentally spilled the beans about a huge plot twist from the upcoming top-secret final season.
As The Independent reports, Welsh actor Wilf Scolding — who has portrayed the late Rhaegar Targaryen in some brief flashbacks — shared a photo of himself outside the Europa Hotel in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Why is this important? Belfast is one of the locations where the show is filmed, leading to speculation that viewers will be seeing more of Rhaegar who, according to a fan theory based on hints dropped throughout the series, is the real father of Jon Snow (Kit Harington), with Ned Stark (Sean Bean) only pretending Jon is his bastard son in order to conceal his true parentage as the offspring of Rhaegar and Ned’s sister, Lyanna Stark. Beacuse the pair were secretly married, this would make Jon a legitimate heir to the Targaryen dynasty.
If Scolding, who deleted the Instagram pic shortly after posting it, will indeed return to portray Rhaegar in further flashbacks, this lends credence to the theory about Jon’s true origins and the implications of his bloodline — as the son of Rhaegar, older brother of Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), this would make him the grandson of the Mad King; Dany, on the other hand, would be Jon’s aunt, which means that he, not Dany, is the true heir to the Iron Throne.
While the mind boggles trying to sort out all the family-tree intrigue, HBO has confirmed the eighth and final season of “Game of Thrones” is set to debut sometime in 2019.
