Mariah Carey Speaks Out After Revealing Battle With Bipolar Disorder: ‘It’s Just Who I Am’

By Becca Longmire.

Mariah Carey has thanked fans for their support after she revealed she’s been battling bipolar disorder all her life in an interview last month.

The 48-year-old admitted, “It was really nice,” as she spoke out about the fan reaction to her candid chat, telling People: “I say things off the cuff, but sometimes you have to be serious about things. It’s life.

“Everybody has their own stuff. As long as I don’t have to stop being myself, it’s just who I am.”

Carey, who is set to take the stage with her second Las Vegas residency, “The Butterfly Returns”, in July, previously revealed she’d endured “the hardest couple of years.”

“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me. It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.

“I’m actually taking medication that seems to be pretty good. It’s not making me feel too tired or sluggish or anything like that. Finding the proper balance is what is most important.”

Carey’s recent People interview also saw her hint at what fans can expect from her upcoming Vegas dates.

Revealing it’s set to be more “intimate,” the star shared: “It’s not like one of those extravaganza [shows]. This is more like, ‘Here we are, we’re together. Oh, you want me to do this song tonight?’

“Maybe I’ll take a request from the audience. My band are such great players and singers.”
