International A-listers Jessica Chastain, Fan Bingbing and Oscar winners Marion Cotillard, Lupita Nyong’o and Penelope Cruz really want to make a female-led spy movie.
The superstars came together on the Croisette during the 71st annual Cannes Film Festival to court international and domestic buyers to pick up “355”, their proposed movie about a female spy in the vein of “The Bourne Identity”. With fans already salivating over the all-star cast and the actresses heavily promoting their involvement online, there should be no doubt this hot property will get snapped up and ushered into production quickly.
The cast teased the top-secret plot of the movie, revealing the title of the film comes from Agent 335, an unidentified woman who worked for the U.S. government as a secret agent during the American Revolution. Each of the international actresses would play spies from around the world.
The cast gathered in Cannes to build excitement for the film, even teasing a motorcycle fight scene between Cotillard and Chastain according to Vanity Fair.
“I have never seen an African woman intelligence agent,” Nyong’o, who will play a gadget-obsessed character similar to Q in the Bond series. “To me, that was important because I know they exist. What she uses to her advantage is people underestimating her.”
The script has already been written by “Harriet The Spy” screenwriter Theresa Rebeck with “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” director Simon Kinberg set to helm the project. Kinberg reportedly envisions “355” to become a franchise like the “Bourne” and the Bond films. Chastain will produce the film through her company Freckle Films.
