It turns out Jane Fonda got to pick her own love interest in her latest film.
Appearing on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”, the actress spoke about her new film “The Book Club”, about a group of older women who read 50 Shades of Grey in their club, awakening their sexual selves.
“Miami Vice” alum Don Johnson plays Fonda’s love interest in the role, and apparently he was cast at her personal request.
Fonda said she’d seen the 68-year-old recently in a film, “And I was blown away. I think he looks handsomer now than when he was younger.”
“He had a lot of depth, so I said I want him to be my love interest and he was my love interest,” she added.
In an interesting bit of serendipity with the material, Johnson’s daughter Dakota Johnson plays the central role in the “50 Shades of Grey” film adaptations.
Fonda also talked to DeGeneres about turning 80 recently and the fact that she never actually thought she’d live this long.
“If you had told me when I was 20 or 30 that I was acting, still active at 80 on a show like this, I’d say ”No way’,” she said.
Fonda added that she’d assumed she would die “lonely and probably from alcohol or something like that.”
