New footage from the late Rob Stewart’s third documentary “Sharkwater: Extinction” follows the filmmaker around the world as he dove into the underworld of the pirate fishing trade.
The teaser trailer runs at around a minute and features footage of Stewart swimming with sharks in dazzling underwater shots set to an original song by Canadian Chantal Kreviazuk “Child of the Water”.
Kreviazuk shared a statement with ET Canada about her involvement with the project: “It was so moving to write and perform a song for this project. I didn’t know Rob personally, but I feel honoured to be supporting his incredible story and his legacy of saving our oceans.”
Tragically, the 37-year-old filmmaker died during the shooting of the documentary. His body was found off the coast of Florida in February 2017, after he disappeared under the waves following a dive with two friends near a shipwreck close to Islamorada.
Following the devastating news, fans showed an outpouring of support for his family and friends, sharing memories of his 2006 breakthrough film “Sharkwater” and the 2012 follow-up “Revolution”.
The new footage and original song, conceived by Michael Kennedy, are an “artistic tribute” to Stewart, with Kennedy telling Cineplex: “I felt a song would be an amazing way to pay tribute to him. Being able to watch the extraordinary talents of Chantal Kreviazuk bring ‘Child of the Water’ to life was an overwhelming and truly inspiring experience!”
Lush Cosmetics is also partnering with the Rob Stewart Foundation once again ahead of the release of the documentary. Lush and Stewart have partnered several times over the past decade on projects focusing on shark protection and ocean conservation. Now, the company will re-launch its limited edition Shark Fin Soap, with funds being donated to “continuing Rob’s vision of protecting the ocean and everything in it,” according to a company statement. One-hundred per cent of the sale price will go directly to the Rob Stewart Foundation.
“Sharkwater: Extinction” hits theatres Oct. 5. Watch the teaser trailer above.
