Andre 3000 debuted some new music in the wee hours of Sunday morning, and the two surprise tracks have a timely message: Happy Mother’s Day!
The tracks represent the first new music in years from Andre 3000, released on May 13 to celebrate Mother’s Day.
Before releasing the two songs, Andre 3000 (a.k.a. Andre Benjamin) set up an Instagram account and shared a touching photo of himself as a child posing with his mother, who passed away on the day after his birthday in 2013.
Along with the photo, he also shared some text messages from his mother. “Happy Mother’s Day,” he wrote in one caption on Instagram.
The first song, “Me&My (To Bury Your Parents)”, was written several years ago while his parents were still alive, with Pitchfork reporting that the OutKast singer recorded the song three years ago, after they had passed away.
The second song is “Look Ma No Hands”, an instrumental jazz number that clocks in at a hefty 17 minutes, a collaboration with British singer-songwriter-producer James Blake on which Andre 3000 plays bass clarinet.
Following the surprise release of the tracks, fans took to Twitter to share their appreciation for the Mother’s Day music:
