Ariana Grande appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Monday night to perform her new single “No Tears Left to Cry” and was backed by a rather peculiar set of instruments.
In a twist on the popular “Classroom Instruments” segment, the 24-year-old singer joined host Jimmy Fallon and The Roots to play her new single entirely using Nintendo’s Labo line of cardboard Switch accessories.
The final product is a seriously impressive feat, as everything — from the guitars to the keyboards — was constructed and programmed with Nintendo Labo’s Toy-Con range. According to IGN, Fallon, Grande, and The Roots each built their own instruments.
In the video, Fallon plays the lead guitar while Grande belts out her vocals and intermittently hits the custom Labo Triangle. The Roots feature in the background, adding piano and drums.
“It was totally bizarre and such a gamble,” Fallon told IGN. “I didn’t know if it was going to sound good, but Ariana is always down to try something fun and different.”
“Anyone can do what we did really, it just takes time. Whatever you dream of, you can make it.”
