With less than one week away from the Royal Wedding, Canadians are turning to Google to answer questions about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s big day.
ET Canada sat down with Nicole Bell, Trends Expert at Google Canada, who revealed that Canadians are curious to know every last detail about the nuptials set to take place this Saturday, including if the ceremony at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle is cancelled.
From the who, what, when, where and how of the event, Bell says, “Canadians are Googling some of the basic details around the Royal Wedding.”
Questions like, when is the Royal Wedding?; what time is the Royal Wedding?; where is the Royal Wedding? and, will the Royal Wedding be televised?, have all become top-trending questions from the past six months in Canada.
As well, the question of ‘is the Royal Wedding off?’ has become a trending topic, which Bell believes came about after Markle’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., published an open letter in tabloid In Touch, asking Prince Harry to call off the wedding.
“That obviously sent a bunch of panic-stricken Canadians over to Google to find out, ‘Is the Royal Wedding off? Is the Royal Wedding cancelled?'” says Bell. “We saw a big surge in search interest of people trying to find out.”
Meanwhile, Markle’s nationality has been top-of-mind for many Canadians over the past six months with many people asking, “Is Meghan Markle Canadian?”
While the former actress was born in Los Angeles, Bell explains, “We identify Meghan Markle as being Canadian because her show ‘Suits’ [was] filmed here, she lived in downtown Toronto and there were all sorts of stories about Prince Harry coming into Toronto to have their first few dates together.”
After the couple made their public debut at the Invictus Games in Toronto last summer, the viral video of a toddler stealing Prince Harry’s popcorn at the Invictus Games remains the most-watched video of the royal on YouTube to date.
Since announcing their engagement in November 2017, globally YouTube has seen a 174 per cent increase in views related to Prince Harry and a 311 per cent increase in views for Meghan Markle, who is the most-viewed, soon-to-be royal on YouTube in 2018.
Bell adds, “I think there’s a huge amount of excitement around the fact that [Markle] brings a kind of breath of fresh air into the Royal Family.”
