‘Gotham’ Star Cameron Monaghan Can’t Use ‘The Joker’ Name: ‘They Wanted To Reserve These For Films’

“Gotham” and “Shameless” star Cameron Monaghan reveals why his character in the popular DC TV show will not be referred to as “The Joker”.

Monaghan, 24, shared the information while showing off several different looks for his characters, Joker-ish Jeremiah Valeska and his twin brother Jerome, on Twitter.

“Various hair tests. Pure green was off-limits to us (as well as the name “Joker”), a decision from high-up as they wanted to reserve these for films,” the young actor revealed.

Monaghan said the decision was one “ultimately I respect. They did not want to dilute the very lucrative brand. It allowed for creativity on our end.”

Jeremiah Valeska is one of the few characters to not explicitly go by the moniker of the character he resembles. Fellow villains The Riddler and The Penguin have already been acknowledged by their comic book names, for example.

“Gotham” airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
