Bollywood Star Sonam Kapoor-Ahuja Addresses Backlash After She Chose To Adopt Husband’s Surname

People are mad at Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor for choosing to adopt her husband’s surname.

Some social media users accused the “Neerja” actress of giving into a system of patrichary after the recently married actress, 32, revealed she too the name of her husband, Indian businessman Anand Ahuja, 35.

After being criticized for her decision, Kapoor-Ahuja decided to respond. “I have been engaged for a long time. It took me a long time to decide. It’s a choice, at the end of the day. Nobody put a gun to my head,” she said at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, via India Express.

“And if people don’t understand the concept of feminism, they need to go online and look at the description. And how do you know Anand has not changed his name?” she continued

“I have always said that I am a feminist. I have the choice to change my name to what I want to. Kapoor is also my father’s name. So it is a man’s name anyway. I chose to keep both. Anand has also changed his name but nobody wrote about that,” she noted. “I just decided to do it on social media because that’s my platform to say that I have made a choice. It is my personal choice.”

Continuing, “The whole idea of feminism is to have equal opportunities and the choice to do what you want to do. So, whether I want to or do not want to change my name is my personal choice.”

Kapoor, 32, recently tied the knot with Indian businessman Anand Ahuja, 35.
