“Riverdale” star Lili Reinhart is opening up about a problem that’s plagued her for a long time, admitting she suffers from recurrent outbreaks of cystic acne that have caused her “major self-esteem issues” throughout her life.
“I have a cystic breakout on my forehead currently. And I had to do a photo shoot all day long,” Reinhart wrote on her Instagram story, addressing the issue in a series of posts, reports People. “I’ve had cystic acne since I was 12. And it has caused major self-esteem issues ever since.”
As you might think, doing a photo shoot during an acne outbreak isn’t exactly a confidence booster.
“I had to put my biggest insecurity on display. There was nowhere to hide,” Reinhart, 21, continued. “20+ people were studying my face on the camera monitor at any given time during the 11-hour shoot. And all I could think about when I was in front of the camera were the pimples on my forehead.”
As Reinhart wrote, she’s gotten in the habit of texting her mother whenever she experiences a “bad breakout.”
“I tell her how ugly I feel and how these breakouts shatter my confidence every time they appear,” she wrote. “I’m not sure if or when I’ll ever be able to accept my skin as it is. It’s problematic. It scars easily. It’s painful.”
By talking about it openly and honestly, Reinhart hopes that help those who suffer from similar skin issues — including herself — and encouraged others to share their stories using the hashtag #breakoutbuddy.
“I feel the need to talk about my struggle with acne,” she added, . “Because maybe if I normalize my broken-out skin, more people…including myself…will be able to feel OK about their skin,” she concluded. “My breakouts don’t define me. To anyone out there who feels embarrassed or ashamed by breakouts… I feel you. We have each other. So let’s get through this acne experience together. I’d love to hear your skin story. Write or post about your acne experience under this hashtag I just made up off the top of my head.”
