Bill Maher addressed the abrupt cancellation of “Roseanne” during his “Real Time” monologue on Friday, tackling the controversy right at the top of the show.
“It’s been a tough week for the line,” he said, explaining that he’s referring to the line “that comedians sometimes cross.”
Noting that “Roseanne will always be a friend of mine,” Maher then launched into a flurry of jokes at her expense, such as pointing out that her tweets “have been described as abhorrent bordering on presidential.”
He also pointed out that Barr “has said she has multiple personalities — and unfortunately one of them is quite a racist,” adding, “It’s also not a mystery to me how a person with mental illness could be taken in by a party that has lost its mind.”
Showing a screenshot of Barr’s offensive tweet about Obama administration aide Valerie Jarrett — Barr tweeted, “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj” — Maher admitted that if there was a joke in there he didn’t get it. “Because I don’t have a decoder ring,” he quipped, “I have no f**king clue what you wingnuts in your bubble are talking about.”
Maher also reflected back on his own history with President Trump, when he appeared on “The Tonight Show” in 2013 and goofed on Trump’s cash offer to anyone who could produce Barack Obama’s birth certificate by offering the “Celebrity Apprentice” host $5 million to prove that he wasn’t the offspring of Fred Trump and an orangutan (Trump sued for slander, then dropped the lawsuit).
Pointing out how his primate-related joke differs from Barr’s tweet, Maher outlined four key differences, starting with #1: “Trump is an orangutan.”
The second difference, he added, is that “white people have not been subjected to a racist trope comparing them to apes for hundreds of years,” while the third is that his orangutan jibe was a direct response to Trump’s “birtherism racist bulls**t.”
Finally, #4: “I’ve already been fired by ABC,” he quipped, referencing the network cancelling his show “Politically Incorrect” over a joke he made about the terrorists who flew airliners into the World Trade Center on 9/11.
