Cate Blanchett and Sarah Paulson dropped by the “Today” show on Tuesday morning and had host Hoda Kotb in tears of laughter.
The “Ocean’s 8” stars were on the show to promote the all-female heist movie which opens this Friday but instead spent the entire interview playfully trying to upstage each other and cracking jokes.
Before Kotb can even ask the first question Blanchett and Paulson are already bickering. “You guys clearly have a thing going on,” Kotb says.
“We’re having a hard time,” Paulson admits. “Because you came wearing that,” Blanchett jokes, directing her attention to Paulson’s dress. “Get a stylist.”
“I borrowed it from your mother,” Paulson snaps back. “I got it from your mom.”
Kotb can barely contain herself as the two award-winning actresses go back and forth about their various accomplishments. “Oscar winner!” Blanchett declares, pointing to herself. She then turns her attention back to her co-star. “You won an Emmy? One? That’s nice.”
Eventually, the determined “Today” show host manages to sneak in a question, asking which of the women signed onto the movie first. Paulson says it was Blanchett, who jokingly responds, “And I tried to get out of it when I heard who the rest of the cast was going be, but they wouldn’t let me.”
The interview never gets back on track after that point, as Blanchett points out that Kotb’s mascara is running due to laughing so much. In the end, Kotb calls for help from her co-host Savannah Guthrie, who runs on to set and squeezes onto the sofa.
Seeing the two co-hosts seated together, Blanchett decides to do the same, sitting herself on Paulson’s lap and acting as if the “American Horror Story” actress has disappeared.
“Ocean’s 8,” which also stars Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina and Rihanna, opens in theaters this Friday.
