Jada Pinkett Smith says she was completely behind her son wearing skirts.

In a new episode of her “Red Table Talk” series, the actress sat down with Jaden, as well as her mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones and daughter Willow Smith, and opened up their family life.

The 46-year-old recalled supporting Jaden as he broke through the gender divide in his fashion choices by wearing skirts.

“I give Jaden props,” she said, commending him on his bravery. “Being a black young man –– and the son of like an über masculine hip-hop star.”

“I remember Will calling me and being like, ‘Have you talked about this Jaden and him wearing a skirt?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I have. He’s pretty happy about it.'”

Jaden also explained his unique motivation for the fashion choice. “I wore the skirts so I could look fly,” he said. “That’s why I wore the skirts, so everyone would say, ‘He’s an innovator. His head’s in a different place.’”

The family also talked about Jaden’s decision to become emancipated from his parents at 15.

Jada said she was “devastated,” but also supportive. “I was like, He’s right,” she recalled. “The time is now, he’s 15. It’s time for him to leave the house.”

Her mother then chimed in, “And I would have never agreed with that.”

Pinkett Smith said that she had told her husband Will Smith when Jaden was younger that they would be lucky to keep him at home until he was 16, “because he was so mature.”
