Fans of Drake and “Degrassi” lost their minds when the rapper dropped his “I’m Upset” music video, which featured a “Degrassi” class reunion (the Toronto rapper played Jimmy Brooks on the Canadian teen drama from 2001 until 2009).
However, some fans noticed that two “Degrassi” characters were missing: J.T. and Sean.
Daniel Clark, who played Sean on the show, heard these questions and went live on Instagram to offer some answers.
“I had no idea that this happened,” he explained. “Like, I woke up just as surprised as everyone else. I also heard about it for the first time, and was watching for the first time… I wish I had an answer for you guys. I don’t know.”
Clark elaborated in an interview with Page Six. “No one ever reached out to me about this,” he said. “I have no idea even when it was filmed. I woke up this morning and watched the music video and was like, ‘What the hell is going on? It sucks because it would have been great to see everybody. The best part is the fans are getting what they want and that’s most important and everyone looks so happy, so that’s kind of the silver lining there. It looked like everyone was having a great time, but for me, it was kind of sad too, because we were all really like family.”
As for J.T. (Ryan Cooley), Drake himself provided the answer for that one.
Drizzy replied to an Instagram commenter who wrote, “I’m upset… Because you didn’t bring back JT.”
His reply was simple. “He thought it was a scam,” wrote Drake.
Mike Lobel, who played Sean’s pal Jay Hogart, was also irked that he wasn’t invited:
“I honestly don’t have much to say on it, I wasn’t invited to the shoot,” Lobel told Page Six. “I love Aubrey [Drake’s real name is Aubrey Graham] and think he’s a great guy, everyone looked great in the video and I wish I could have been there to hang out with the crew.”
ET Canada sat down with cast members Shane Kippel (Spinner), Miriam McDonald (Emma) and Stefan Brogren (Snake) to chat about the surprise appearance.
“We’ve known for about two weeks,” Kippel said. “Holding on to a secret like that was just ruining my life.”
“He made a point of actually telling us, ‘You guys can hang out or you can go if you want to, this is your party,’” McDonald said of her day on set. “And we’re all looking at him like, ‘Oh yeah, we’re going to leave… we’re going to walk out.’ Like, come on.”
The “Degrassi” trio also address J.T.’s absence, backing up Drizzy’s “scam” comment.
“Ryan was such a part of our core group,” explained McDonald. “Sarah [Barrable-Tishauer] and Ryan I guess keep in touch, so I asked her, ‘Why didn’t he show up?’ Apparently he thought this was fake, he thought it was a scam. He see’s the email, he says, ‘Oh my gosh, this couldn’t be real.’ And so he turned the whole thing down.”
” I thought it was a scam,” admitted Brogren. Watch:
