Rian Johnson is responding to fan criticism over character deaths in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”, and he’s bringing the receipts. Needless to say, if you haven’t watched “The Last Jedi” and want to remain spoiler-free, now’s the time to stop reading.

On Wednesday, a “Star Wars” fan posted an image of an interview with George Lucas in a tweet comparing “the difference between @rianjohnson and George Lucas.” The Twitter user circled Lucas’ comments saying that killing Luke Skywalker would “alienate the audience.”

“This is a fairytale. You want everybody to live happily ever after and nothing bad happens to anybody…” Lucas’ quote reads.

Johnson fired back with a simple response, providing screen grabs of “bad” things happening to characters and deaths in Lucas’ films, captioning them with a simple “huh.”

It’s a greatest hits of on-screen deaths including that of Yoda, Padme Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Mace Windu – and who could forget the time Luke Skywalker lost his hand?

Johnson followed his argument up with a “bonus track” – an image of Anakin’s very un-fairytale-like murder of Jedi younglings.

The director responded to the fan who originally posted the Lucas interview, tweeting that new “Star Wars” films “won’t exactly line up with what every fan is expecting or wants.”
