Meryl Streep and Meredith Vieira are keeping the memory of Christopher & Dana Reeve alive.
Vieira hosted the 25th “A Magical Evening”; gala last night in New York City, benefiting the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, and spoke about what the charity has accomplished.
“When Chris has his [horseback riding] accident, there was very little hope for him. He supplied the hope,”; Vieira said on the red carpet of the event, which raised close to $1 million for the foundation. “He’s the one who said, “Don’t give up, guys, because I’m not going to.’ That has carried through, and now we’re seeing such remarkable things happening to people with spinal cord injury. There really is hope for folks.”;
Streep echoed the sentiment. “There’s a special magic in it, because they’re not here anymore, but I feel them,”; she said. “I feel their presence and their love, and what made this foundation what it is, is still very much alive.”;
Christopher Reeve, known for his iconic film portrayal of Superman, died in 2004 after going into cardiac arrest, and his wife Dana passed away in 2006 after battling lung cancer, but Streep still carries fond memories of her friends.
“The way they looked at each other, it was just a bond of love so palpable, so real, that you really felt it could change the world,”; she shared. “It sort of is proving to do that.”;
The legendary actress also reacted to U.S. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s admission that she would want Streep to play her in a biopic. “That’s very nice of her,”; she laughed, “[but] I think Catharine MacKinnon’s got that wrapped up!”;
