Idris Elba will flex his bad guy opposite Dwayne Johnson in the “Fast And The Furious” spin-off.
The 45-year-old Brit has joined “Fast” franchise alums Johnson and Jason Statham in “Hobbs And Shaw”. Directed by “Deadpool 2″‘s David Leitch, the spin-off will see Johnson reprise his role as special agent Luke Hobbs while Statham returns to play criminal mastermind Deckard Shaw. While the characters have often been at odds on-screen, the new movie will see the unlikely duo team up to face off against Elba’s character.
Johnson’s Hobbs is a fan-favourite. Universal Pictures, the studio behind the movies, has been looking for a way to get a spin-off greenlit since the actor joined the franchise for “Fast Five”. Statham came on board for the seventh installment.
Elba previously took a turn on the dark side as the villain of “Star Trek: Beyond”.
“Hobbs And Shaw” is slated to begin production in September with a release date of July 26, 2019.
Reps for Elba and the studio have not yet confirmed his involvement. But The Rock tweeted about the news on Thursday afternoon: “He’s a baaaaaad man. Welcoming my dude @idriselba with tattooed and open arms to our
#HobbsAndShaw Fast & Furious spin-off movie. Every hero is only as good as their villain. Cue the music… let’s dance.”
