Idris Elba Signs On To Play The Villain In ‘Fast And Furious’ Spinoff With Dwayne Johnson And Jason Statham

Idris Elba will flex his bad guy opposite Dwayne Johnson in the “Fast And The Furious” spin-off.

The 45-year-old Brit has joined “Fast” franchise alums Johnson and Jason Statham in “Hobbs And Shaw”. Directed by “Deadpool 2″‘s David Leitch, the spin-off will see Johnson reprise his role as special agent Luke Hobbs while Statham returns to play criminal mastermind Deckard Shaw. While the characters have often been at odds on-screen, the new movie will see the unlikely duo team up to face off against Elba’s character.

Johnson’s Hobbs is a fan-favourite. Universal Pictures, the studio behind the movies, has been looking for a way to get a spin-off greenlit since the actor joined the franchise for “Fast Five”. Statham came on board for the seventh installment.

Elba previously took a turn on the dark side as the villain of “Star Trek: Beyond”.

“Hobbs And Shaw” is slated to begin production in September with a release date of July 26, 2019.

Reps for Elba and the studio have not yet confirmed his involvement. But The Rock tweeted about the news on Thursday afternoon: “He’s a baaaaaad man. Welcoming my dude @ with tattooed and open arms to our Fast & Furious spin-off movie. Every hero is only as good as their villain. Cue the music… let’s dance.”
