Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba Among Indie Spirit Nominees

By Will Reid.

As awards season heats up, the nominations for the Film Independent Spirit Awards have been announced.

Beasts Of No Nation and Carol lead overall with six nominations each, including Best Feature. Idris Elba was recognized in the Best Supporting Male category for Beasts, while Carol scored Best Female Lead nods for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

Brie Larson also earned a Best Female Lead nomination for Room, which scored three nods in total. The Irish/Canadian co-production previously won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the cast of Spotlight, which includes Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo, was absent from the acting categories; instead, the film will receive the Robert Altman Award, honouring the cast as an ensemble.
