One Instagram model went from swimming with sharks to almost swimming with the fishes.
Katarina Zarutskie, a nursing and business double major who also models on Instagram, is receiving international attention over a stunning photo.
The 19-year-old was captured on camera floating on her back, surrounded by nurse sharks in the Bahamas’ Exumas islands. The photo came at a cost, however, as you can see one of the sharks swam over and went all “Jaws” on Zarutskie’s left wrist.
“From my previous knowledge from surfing and scuba diving, I know nurse sharks are usually very safe,” she told BBC News. “I’ve seen countless photos of people with them on Instagram.”
“I leaned back, and then that shark, he came and he bit down on my arm,” she told Buzzfeed. “At that point, your body has so much adrenaline going and you just have to get out of the situation, but I stayed extremely calm. I am lucky to have my hand. It is a testament to how calm I stayed.”
She also told NBC News, “He had my wrist in his mouth and I could feel his teeth sinking into my arm.”
So what did Zarutskie learn from her close encounter? “They are wild animals and it’s an uncontrollable situation,” Zarutskie told Buzzfeed. “I would recommend people to do it but be smart about it. You are in their home.”
Nurse Sharks are often considered docile and harmless, but are known to occasionally bite people if they are bothered in their habitat or mistaken a hand or arm for food.
