Meghan Markle’s father continues to speak out about his daughter, and now says that he’s worried the Duchess of Sussex is struggling with her new role within the Royal Family.
“My thing about my daughter right now is that I think she is terrified,” Thomas Markle told The Sun in a new interview.
“I see it in her eyes, I see it in her face and I see it in her smile,” added Markle, 73. “I’ve seen her smile for years. I know her smile. I don’t like the one I’m seeing now.”
He continued: “This one isn’t even a stage smile – this is a pained smile. That might be just having a couple of bad days. I don’t know. It really worries me. I think she’s under too much pressure. There’s a high price to pay to be married to that family.”
Among Markle’s gripes are what he describes as the outdated royal “dress code,” telling the newspaper, “Meghan seems like something out of an old movie. Why in 2018 are we dressing like the 1930s? Why do they have to cover their knees?”
Markle also pointed out that he’s not a fan of royal protocol and the meticulous rules that must be followed. “I think Meghan is in deeper than I am,” he explained. “I’m not blaming Harry or anyone but they are following rules that don’t make sense to me.”
Added Markle: “They are no less human than anybody else. God knows, I feel sorry for them, for not being able to show emotion.”
According to Markle, he’s being “shunned” by his daughter’s royal in-laws over staging photos with a paparazzi accomplice.
“The reason I am being shunned is because I made a profit on the staged pictures. Anyone who makes a profit off the Royal Family becomes shunned. But I could have made well over $100,000 by just doing a talk show. So if I moved to London and started selling cups with my daughter’s face on, would they shun me? The Royal Family is living by rules that are outdated. Half of Great Britain seems to make a fortune selling pictures of my daughter and her husband. Are they shunned?” asked Markle.
“Does this make any sense to you or anyone else? I don’t get it,” he continued. “I have already apologized to the Royal Family. I honestly think that if the Queen took the time to think that she would not see me because I did some stupid photographs, that is ridiculous.”
Added Markle: “Every time I see or hear about that wedding, I am paying for it. It’s not easy. Anytime anyone comes up to me and says, ‘So sorry, your daughter looked beautiful.’ For the rest of my life I’ve got to live that down.”
Following publication of Markle’s interview, a source told ET that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are “frustrated he keeps speaking to the tabloids and taking payment for interviews.”
Speaking with TMZ, Markle offered a response to the royals’ alleged frustration with him.
“I was silent for a full year and the press beat me up every day saying I was a hermit hiding in Mexico, so I gave my story. Apparently that interview put the Royal Family in their silence mode … so, I gave another interview to break the silence. All they have to do is speak to me,” Markle told TMZ.
“Tomorrow is my birthday, 74 years old,” he added, “and I’m enjoying the fact that I can make the entire Royal Family not speak and maybe I can get a laugh out of the Duchess.”
Markle also recorded a special message to the Royal Family, insisting he no longer has any other way to get in contact with his daughter.
“If I had a message for Harry, it’s get over it,” he said. “I’m your new father-in-law.” Watch:
