Sting will be taking the stage for the Canadian premiere of his musical “The Last Ship” next year.
Mirvish Productions announced Tuesday that the acclaimed musical will be coming to Toronto for a six-week limited engagement at the Princess of Wales Theatre from Feb. 9 to Mar. 24.
Better yet, Sting himself will star in the show playing shipyard foreman Jackie White.
Sting wrote the music and lyrics for “The Last Ship”, which was inspired by his 1991 album The Soul Cages, and which recently finished a 12-week tour through the U.K. and Ireland.
“It was a joy to see the show’s journey from the rehearsal room to the stage this year — first in my hometown of Newcastle then around the UK and Ireland,” Sting said. “It was also extremely moving to witness the incredible audience response in each city we visited. It will be hugely exciting and a personal privilege for me to perform in the show in Toronto and I’m looking forward to ‘The Last Ship’ continuing its journey there next year.”
Producer David Mirvish said, “How lucky and privileged are we in Toronto to actually have Sting star in his own show? These opportunities — the stuff of theatrical legends — come along very rarely. We are indeed blessed that Sting has chosen our community in which to tell his own very personal story.”
Tickets for the production are now on sale to Mirvish 2018/19 season subscribers, with regular tickets going on sale to the public later this fall.
