Cher confirmed she’ll be releasing an album of ABBA covers when she appeared on the “Today” show Monday, July 16.
The 72-year-old, who plays Ruby Sheridan — Meryl Streep’s mother — in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”, made the exciting announcement as she chatted about her part in the eagerly anticipated sequel. She released the tracklist one week later.
Cher revealed, “After I did ‘Fernando’ [in the movie] I thought it would really be fun to do an album of ABBA songs, so I did. It’s not what you would think of when you think of ABBA, ’cause I did it in a different way.”
The “Believe” superstar called starring in the movie “one of the most extraordinary adventures of my life,” before she added: “Everyone was so gracious and they just loved me and Meryl was hiding when I was doing ‘Fernando’.”
Cher, who is now the subject of her own Broadway musical “The Cher Show”, said she has seen the “Mamma Mia!” musical three times and “was dancing in the aisles with everybody.”
The musician’s comments come after she admitted she had to be “talked into” the role.
She revealed on “The Graham Norton Show”, “My agent called me and said, ‘You’re in the new “Mamma Mia” film,’ and then hung up. I didn’t have much choice!”
“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” hits theatres July 20.
