She may be revered as a gay icon but there was a time when Cher had never even encountered a gay person.
Speaking with GLAAD while promoting her role in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”, the 72-year-old music singer/Oscar winner recalls the first time she came into contact with gay men when she was 12.
“I came home from school and there were these two guys in our living room,” explains Cher, whose son, Chaz Bono, is transgender. “They were talking to my mom and her best friend, and they were so happy and excited about everything they were talking about, so animated.”
Admitting she admired their joie de vivre, Cher continues: “I thought, These guys are much more fun than the regular men that come over to visit. And I didn’t know that they were gay, but I just thought, These guys are great, and it just started from then.”
