As Donald Trump continues to behave as no president in recent history ever has, each day brings new shocks and surprises — and plenty of fodder for Stephen Colbert’s monologue on Global‘s “The Late Show”.
On Thursday night, Colbert admitted he’s not immune to the fatigue of these daily bombshells.
“It is hard to imagine you could be this shocked every day by the Trump administration,” Colbert quipped. “I mean, freshly shocked!”
“I think it’s because every day they attach the electrodes to a different part of us.”
Colbert had plenty to say about Trump’s latest shocker: his revelation that he invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the White House for a visit. This would be mere days after he lamely tried to walk back by claiming he accidentally substituted ‘would’ for ‘wouldn’t’ regarding his acceptance of Putin’s word that Russia never tampered with the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
“Second meeting? Second meeting?!” Colbert gasped in mock horror. “Because the first one went so well! … Nothing could have gone worse than your meeting in Helsinki!”
The way Colbert sees it, there are only two possible explanations for Trump’s weird behaviour when it comes to the Russian despot. “Either Putin has something on him, or he’s an idiot,” Colbert said before breaking into his Trump impression to ponder what could possibly be next.
“I want Putin for a sushi dinner, I want Bill Cosby for the slumber party, Harvey Weinstein for movie night, and security will be handled by MS-13,” he joked. “Make it happen.”
