In the first half of season five, the divide between the Lothbrok family climaxed with Ragnar’s sons battling each other to rule the world, resulting in a strategic victory for Ivar the Boneless (Alex Hogh Andersen), who vows vengeance those who betrayed him — especially Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick).

When season five returns, viewers will meet legendary Viking Duke Rollo (Clive Standen), whose arrival causes even more upheaval in a Kattegat still reeling from Ivar becoming king. As Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) and Lagertha flee Ivar’s murderous forces with Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Ivar’s tyrannical reign ushers in a new dark age that threatens everything.

“Ultimately, Ivar’s reign will not go unchallenged by the sons of Ragnar and old enemies will become allies to defeat the despot who has declared himself a God on earth,” reads a synopsis for the upcoming episodes. “Meanwhile in Iceland, Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) battles the elements, and his own settlers’ desire for revenge, to forge a Viking colony on the beautiful and desolate landscape.”

In an interview with ET Canada’s Carlos Bustamante, Ludwig opens up about what Rollo’s arrival means for Bjorn.

“You’ll definitely see some very weird character dynamics between the two,” he explains. I don’t want to give too much away. You’re definitely going to see a showdown for sure. It might be with who you expect. Or it might be with exactly who you expect but I will say that this season 5B for me was the most creatively fulfilling to shoot. I just had so much to do with Bjorn and I mean the end of 5B is pretty insane.”

Vikings” returns to History on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
