Best known for playing Han Solo’s Wookiee sidekick Chewbacca in “Star Wars” and its sequels, Peter Mayhew is on the mend after undergoing spinal surgery to remedy some mobility issues the 74-year-old actor had been experiencing in recent years.

At a height of seven foot two, Mayhew had been seen using a cane and, more recently, a wheelchair at “Star Wars” movie premieres and fan events; he’s hoping that the surgery will allow him to move around easier on his own.

In a tweet issued on Tuesday, Mayhew explained to fans that he’d been “quiet as of late” in order to undergo “spinal surgery to improve my mobility,” adding that the surgery has been successful.

“I’ll be spending the upcoming weeks recovering,” he added.

In some followup tweets, Mayhew apologized for not being able to make some scheduled appearances and asked fans to make a donation to his foundation in lieu of sending flowers and gifts.
