Tom Cruise is once again the king of the box office, with the highly anticipated debut of “Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ crushing the competition at the box office in its opening weekend.

As The Hollywood Reporter reports, the sixth film in the “M:I” franchise delivered a $61.5 million domestic take and a global tally of $153.5 million.

Not only is “Fallout” the weekend’s #1 movie, it also marks the biggest domestic opening weekend in the franchise’s history; that honour had previously been held by the second “Mission: Impossible” movie, which enjoyed a $57.8 million opening weekend domestically.

“Tom Cruise has proven time and time again that when it comes to action, he is one of the most dependable stars out there,” Paramount domestic distribution chief Kyle Davies tells THR of the film’s star. “We’ve had all these big visual-effect-driven summer movies. Now comes along a movie where the actor and director are putting it all on the line with real stunts. It provides raw and visceral entertainment that people are excited about.”

Coming in at a distant second in the weekend’s box-office race: “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again”, bringing in an additional $15 million for a domestic total of $70.4 million.
