Constance Wu On Her Obligation To Represent Asians In Hollywood: ‘A Privilege And An Honour’

By Alyssa Croezen.

Constance Wu is making her mark on Hollywood.

In the September cover story of FASHION magazine, the “Crazy Rich Asians” star shares her feelings toward representing Asians in Hollywood.

“I have a pretty good capacity to talk about [the lack of Asian representation in Hollywood] in such a way that it’s as clear and insightful as it can be in the moment. I actually think it’s kind of a privilege and an honour–and an obligation,” the 36-year-old starlet tells the magazine.

Wu reveals that it wasn’t always easy growing up after she became more conscious of being Asian.

“[It first struck me when my friend and I] went to this party, and after walking in, she said to me, ‘We’re the only Asian people here.’ I hadn’t even realized it,” Wu admits. “She had grown up in New York with family around her, so she was used to being in spaces where there were other Asians. I was very used to being in spaces where it was all white people.”

“Crazy Rich Asians” is one of the summer’s most anticipated movies and is the first major Hollywood studio film in 25 years to feature an Asian-American director and all-Asian cast.

However, with her breakout role as Rachel in the film, Wu expresses that she will always speak her truth — regardless of the consequences.

“Of course, I want to get more jobs. But at what cost? If me speaking my mind about something that I think really matters is going to take a part away from me, then that’s not the part I want,” Wu says. “Those aren’t people I want to work with. Not because they’re not great but because we have different values and I’m going to feel like s**t the whole time I’m on that set.”
