The West Hollywood City Council is urging the Los Angeles City Council and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to permanently remove Donald Trump’s star from the Walk of Fame following persistent vandalism.

On Monday night, councillors voted “unanimously” to pass a resolution to remove the U.S. president’s star, according to a tweet from West Hollywood Mayor John Duran.

The motion comes after frequent attacks on the sidewalk star, the most recent of which happened in July when a man destroyed it with a pickaxe. A local 24-year-old resident turned himself in to police a day after the incident and will be arraigned next week on a felony count of vandalism.

Ever since Trump moved into politics, his Hollywood star has been a repeated target of vandalism and protests. A month before his election in 2016, it was similarly wrecked with a pickaxe. The star was repaired, but that didn’t stop people from defacing it with swastikas and other forms of graffiti, including a wall built around the star.

Mayor Duran told CNN that the council did not pass the resolution because Trump is “a conservative” or “a Republican,” but because his actions have disrespected the honour of earning a star on the Walk of Fame.

“When one belittles and attacks minorities, immigrants, Muslims, people with disabilities or women, the honour no longer exists,” he said. “Never have we intruded into our neighbouring city’s business like this. But the circumstances compelled us to make an exception to the rule.”

Though the resolution was approved, it does not guarantee the star will be removed. Leron Gubler, president of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, told CNN: “Once we receive a communication from the City of West Hollywood, it will be referred to our executive committee for consideration at their next meeting,” he explained. “As of now, there are no plans to remove any stars from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

In 2015, amid calls to remove disgraced comedian Bill Cosby’s star, Gruber said that “the Hollywood Walk of Fame is a registered historic landmark” and “because of this, we have never removed a star from the Walk.”
