Michael Jackson influenced many singers that came after him but not Sam Smith, who confesses that he isn’t a fan of the King of Pop.

In an Instagram video taken by fellow musician Adam Lambert, the “Stay With Me” singer is seen on a yacht, listening to Jackson’s 1982 hit “Human Nature”.

“I don’t like Michael Jackson but this is a good song,” Smith is heard saying in the clip.

The video is only five seconds long, so we don’t hear exactly why the Grammy-winning artist doesn’t like MJ. Was Smith not a fan of Jackson as a person? Or does he just not like his music?

Speaking to People this week, Lambert explained how he accidentally posted the video.

“I had my phone on mute, and I did not listen to the video,” he said. “That was a sliver of a fuller conversation; now people are jumping all over him! People need to give him a break.”

Perhaps the dislike stems from 2015 when people accused Smith of ‘ripping off’ Jackson’s “Earth Song” for his “James Bond” theme, “Writing’s On The Wall”. Although, you wouldn’t steal something you didn’t like, right?

In response to Smith’s perceived diss, Grammy Award-winning R&B singer Stephanie Mills, who briefly dated Jackson in the 80s, clapped back, writing: “Don’t come for MICHAEL JACKSON when you wish you have sold as many records and you wish you were the King of Pop like he was.”

“I’m so tired of you people studying our music, and studying our artist and claiming that you don’t like our music,” she continued. “Go sit your 1 HIT WONDER a** down and learn how to finish a tour.”

Wow. Things certainly escalated very quickly!
