Jason Statham And ‘The Meg’ Take A Bite Out Of Weekend Box Office

If there was any question whether filmgoers wanted to watch Jason Statham face off against a prehistoric shark, this weekend’s box office numbers have provided a definitive answer, with “The Meg” swimming to the top of the box office in its opening weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The Meg” doubled estimates that predicted an opening weekend in the $18-$22 million range, instead racking up an impressive $44.5 million at the domestic box office. This was enough to easily capture the weekend’s top spot while becoming Warner Bros.’ biggest domestic opening of the year, bringing in more than “Ready Player One” ($41.8 million) and “Ocean’s 8” ($41.6 million).

The news is even better overseas, with “The Meg” earning $96.8 million (with $50.3 million from China) to result in a global total of $141.3 million (although, as THR points out, the film will need to earn a lot more than that, given its hefty $130-million budget).

Coming in at #2 is “Mission: Impossible — Fallout”, with the Tom Cruise-starring action sequel bringing in an additional $20 million domestically, for a domestic total of $162 million and a global total approaching $428 million.

The rest of the weekend’s top five are Disney’s “Christopher Robin” with a domestic tally of $12.4 million, horror movie “Slender Man” with $11.3 million and Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” with $10.8 million in its opening weekend — marking the director’s biggest opening in more than a decade.
