In an open letter posted on Twitter, the rapper and actress shared the story of how a music video she uploaded to YouTube called “My Vag” helped kicked things off for her despite believing at the time that “it would make me the laughing stock of every job interview ever.”

The 29-year-old explained that over the next few years she lost jobs, went broke, and was kicked off lineups in her pursuit of success.

“Awkwafina was a dream I was chasing, and in some ways, I am still chasing her,” she wrote.

She continued: “Awkwafina wasn’t supposed to exist, but somehow she does. And I think about it every day, that she was born for one reason only– to show every person out there that it is possible.”
