Your favourite restaurant south of the border may not exist if not for undocumented immigrants.
El Compadre, for example, is a red-hot Mexican restaurant in Philadelphia owned by chef Christina Martinez. The chef, an undocumented immigrant, worked her way up from dishwasher to entrepreneur.
“Full Frontal” host Samantha Bee talked to Martinez about the 1.3 million-strong undocumented workers in the U.S. restaurant industry.
“I’m not afraid to talk about the platform that chefs have because we have the power to change the system,” Martinez said. “If Donald Trump comes here, he is welcome… because he is a human being.”
Not one to take things too seriously, Bee made sure to drop some Guy Fieri-worthy “kablams!” between takes.
Bee, 48, also spoke with “Top Chef” host Padma Lakshmi, 47, who said of immigrants, “They don’t want to cause trouble, they will do the grunt work that nobody else is willing to do because they have to support themselves [and] their families, they also often send money back to their birth countries.”
“A lot of them are really afraid to speak up, but everybody has the right to be treated in a dignified manner,” she added. “Immigrants are people too – we just want to work hard, we just want the same thing for our children that anyone else wants for theirs.”
Fans can only hope Bee’s “Girl Fieri” returns in future skits.
