Serena Williams Bows Out Of Her Charity Race Partway Through

By ETCanada.com Staff.

Serena Williams was forced to bow out partway through her own charity race this weekend.

The tennis star and Sports Illustrated’s newly-crowned sportsperson of the year admitted to the defeat in a Facebook video. “I didn’t run the whole way this year, but next year I will,” she said in a live post.

Instead of running the entire 5K race, Williams enlisted the help of a taxi to reach the finish line, the Daily Mail reported.

The Serena Williams Live Ultimate Run took place in Miami Beach on Sunday and raised money for the Serena Williams Fund — a not-for-profit which aims to help “individuals and communities affected by senseless violent, and [promotes] equal access to education.”

Williams, who did not explain why she failed to finish, has been plagued by injuries throughout the year — forcing her to withdraw from several tennis events in 2015.
